LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT AT SCHOOL
Be creative! Challenge your mind and have fun at the same time : Learn an instrument !
This year Tauranga Boys’ College is able to offer group music tuition in a number of instruments including vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, cornet, horn, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.
Lessons occur during the school day for a half hour time slot, and the timetables are rotated to ensure your son will not be removed from the same subject class each week. It is important for students to accept responsibility for catching up on any class work/homework they miss as a result of their instrumental lesson.
Please note that a condition of accepting tuition through the school is that students must be prepared to participate in regular attendance of a school musical group (if there is one suitable for their ability). This will usually involve one rehearsal per week, in lunchtime or after school.
Guitar, bass guitar, and drum students are expected to own their own instruments for home practice but are able to use school instruments for lessons. If you are unsure about the financial commitment of purchasing an instrument, your son can make use of the school instruments to practice during lunchtime or after school as a short-‐term solution. Drummers may start on practice pads for home practice, but eventually will need their own kit.
PLEASE BRING THE ATTACHED FORM TO THE MEETING ON TUESDAY 6TH FEBRUARY – LUNCHTIME IN THE GYYT.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Your son will find out what group he is placed in at the start of Week 3 (13 Feb). This information will be posted on the noticeboard outside the music department, as well as on the school website under ‘SPORTS/ARTS’.
If there are a greater number of students than time available, a waiting list system will be started. Priority is given to students taking music as a curriculum subject.
