Courses

Curriculum
During a student's progress through the College, his Tutor, Form teacher and subject teachers will talk to him about courses and advise him on his selection. It is important that if parents have concerns relating to course options that they first consult their son's Tutor. The crucial stage in course selection is at the end of Year 10 when students select a course for Year 11. It is essential that the course chosen meets the needs at Year 12 and Year 13 or leads to the type of employment the student wishes to seek on leaving College.

Year 9 (Form 3)
Particular care is taken to gather as much information as possible about the background of new entrants from contributing schools. Students are placed in courses best suited to their ability. All students take English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Technology Music, & Art . Technology includes materials, structures, electronics, process and information technologies. In addition, students choose four one term options, and one full year option. Full year Options are chosen from Business Studies, Graphics, Japanese, Reading, Spanish & Te Reo Maori. One term options are chosen from Avid Cinema, Carving, Computer Art, Cooperative Learning, Drama, Food Technology, Performing Arts, Print Media, Philosophy, Sports Excellence, Thinking About Thinking, Thinking Creatively.

Two extension classes follow an enriched programme. From these two classes one accelerate class is selected for the following year.

  • The two Learning Needs classes have a curriculum best suited to their needs.
  • The two Special Needs classes have a curriculum suited to their abilities along with remedial work and one to one tuition in reading and other special programmes.

A Year 9 Digital Learning Class will again be offered in 2006. In this class, students use their own laptops as medium for learning. Entry is by application only.
Courses are designed so that students showing industry, ability and application are able to move into higher banded classes.

Year 10 (Form 4)
All students take English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education and Technology.
They choose two options from: Art, Business Studies, Food Technology, Graphics, Horticulture, Japanese, Maori, Music, Reading, Spanish.
A further three one term options are selected from: Art, Carving, Computer Art, Drama, Information Technology, Music Craft, Print Media, Sports Science, Learning to Learn.
Two clasess of accelerated students will study at NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics and some Level 1 standards in English; one of these classes will also study NCEA Level 1 History and Science, while the other will also study NCEA Geography. The other subjects for these classes are as above.
A Year 10 digital learning class will be offered in 2006. In this class, students use their own laptops as a medium for learning. Entry to the Year 10 Digital Learning class is by application.

Year 11 (Form 5)
All students take English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, and 3 or 4 options.
The accelerated classes take English (NCEA Level 1 and 2) Mathematics (NCEA Level 2) and 4 options. One class will study a six subject NCEA Level 1 course while most students will choose up to five Level 1 subjects. One term modular courses and industy training courses are also offered.

Year 12 (Form 6)
All students study five subjects, and do a combination of one 3-period or 3 one-period modules. The accelerate class study a mix of six NCEA Level 2 and 3 subjects.

Year 13 (Form 7)
All students study five subjects, but the number of subjects at NCEA Level 3 will be determined by their academic history and the qualification they are seeking.
Students may study Level 3 subjects in which they have met the entry requirements, otherwise they are encouraged to either repeat individual Level 2 subjects, or pick up new subjects at Level 2.
University papers in Chemistry, Mathematics. Physics and Philosophy are available for students from the accelerated classes if specific criteria are met. These classes also work towards New Zealand Scholarship.
