School and Community
Tauranga Boys' College is located near the central business district of the fast-growing coastal city of Tauranga (population 100,000).
It is a well-established school with a national reputation for excellence in all things. It serves a community which combines the philosophies of the business marketplace with traditional rural values.
The College currently has a student roll of 1560 of whom 20% are Maori and 2.3% Asian. The current demand for places is greater than capacity, hence an enrolment scheme is in place. The expected maximum roll is 1600 students.
The College provides a balance of educational opportunity. While its primary focus is on academic need, it also recognises that sporting, cultural, spiritual and citizenship values also have a place in its curriculum and it attempts to provide for that need.
It has a clearly defined educational philosophy of streaming and banding junior students on an academic basis in the belief that this provides the best academic opportunities for each student. Examinations form part of this process.
In the senior school a variety of academic pathways exist to provide for boys' needs. The curriculum offers 135 courses ranging from University level 1 chemistry and level 1 mathematics papers to short term practical courses leading directly to skill-based training or tertiary education.
The College offers a variety of sporting and cultural activities. In fact, 30 sports are available to all students while our Sports Academy provides professional coaching in a range of these sports. A ten acre sports block adjoins the College grounds while other smaller areas provide for soccer and field hockey.
No school is complete without offering a performing arts dimension. Boys are encouraged to participate in the performing arts and music has long been a front runner of the arts.
Tauranga Boys' College believes in maintaining high standards of discipline. The school rules provide clear guidelines for behaviour and it is expected that the whole school will meet these requirements. |
